These rugs are what started it all for Corniche 26 years ago. We first saw these rugs of gigantic proportions at a carpet show in Germany. We imported several rugs, colors and designs and had a tremendous response. The shear scale of the yarns and texture of our first rug, Carmel Surf, was at once obvious in dimension. Of the first ten showrooms where we introduced Carmel Surf, nine of them bought rugs and samples of this program. It wasn’t long before we bought a container load; such was the demand for “the shaggiest rug in the world”.
Camel Surf is made of three wool yarns, all hard twisted and heat set with a premium blend of New Zealand and European Wools. The rug is hand loomed and fashioned in a soft, scalloped concentric circle design which can be very bold and pronounced or softly subtle depending on coloration.
A few years later we made a rug with no pattern, “just” very long, highly contrasted yarns: a fine, two ply yarn, a medium three ply, and a gigantic three ply wool hand tied to four to five inches in length rendering a rug of excessive proportions. So we call this rug Excessive. Excessive has inspired many a “knock off” in the last 26 years, but it will always be the ultimate shag rug.
Over the years we have been asked to make rugs with other combinations of yarns/colors and textures and have delighted in participating in such “adventures” in texture with our clients. Really any color, size or shape can be made by our friends in Portugal
In our last visit to Portugal we had the privilege of seeing the new flat weave rugs they have made. These rugs are also available in custom design, size and color as well as wool, mohair, and alpaca yarn.
Carmel Surf utilizes these same three yarns woven to form a subtle pattern of scalloped, concentric circles. Excessive and Carmel Surf are available in four stocked colors and can be custom dyed to any color of your choice.
Mari is a new quality we offer which is made of all thick yarns. Like Excessive and Carmel Surf, Mari is available in any size or color you may choose. Nicole is a blend of thick and thin yarns.
