Sometimes the best ideas for the environment
are the simplest ones…
This unique broadloom carpet is made completely of natural materials from front to back.
We are excited to be able to offer this biodegradable product to our customers.
It’s unfortunate that this feature is unique, but we are working to expand this as a viable flooring option.
This organic carpet has the unique and exciting quality of being renewable and sustainable.
Latex is tapped from rubber trees, wool is sheared off the sheep and jute grows like a weed. The backing is made from sustainable raw materials: jute and latex..
All of these components are renewable and sustainable. We’ve brought them together for our customers in a way that is friendly to the environment. You will have beautiful, wool carpet for years. When the time comes for your carpet to be disposed, it won’t end up as land fill, rather it will naturally decompose back into the earth, becoming a useful soil enhancement.
Our Journey to Organic Carpet
In 1989, with the purchase of a small custom carpet mill called Sahara, we began making our own brand of carpet. The carpet we made was always custom, tufted on small machines called a “Pass Machine”, each carpet was made to the desired specification of our clientele, mostly Interior Designer showrooms and some Corporate Aircraft shops. The carpet was made to very specific requirements of color, texture, pattern, shape, etc.
About this time the carpet industry was somewhat rocked by an investigative story on the toxidity of carpet by a major Television new network. It turned out that the scientific pretense was somewhat suspect however the “horse was out of the barn” so to speak. More and more folk were requesting carpeting with those who were “chemically sensitive” in mind.
Low and behold, upon some cursory inspection, we found there were elements in our carpet, such as the latex, that we found, could be “cleaned up”. The latex we were purchasing contained butadiene and styrene, both carcinogenic. Well, don’t you know, that started what became a crusade: off we were to Malaysia to purchase pure latex!
Five years later we were one of ten carpet manufactures listed in “Your Environmental Home” written by Paul Bierman-Lytle, a Connecticut architect many would consider the “godfather” of green building movements.
Turn the clock back another fifteen years and just recently we became the first mill to produce a certified compostable carpet, made with totally organic materials. Our commercial carpets are A. made from totally sustainable raw materials, B. Non-toxic/benign in the work environment and C. Enjoy the most benign post consumption disposition of any carpet produced in America. That’s why we refer to our carpets in this way: “AS GREEN AS IT GETS!”
While we applaud efforts to turn carpets made of man-made material into something less hideous than landfill, we simply have a different vision, a simpler, clearer vision of producing a carpet that has NO harm to our planet or it’s residents.
As you view some of our carpets what you are going to notice is the natural superiority of wool carpet, no man made fiber can hold a candle to color broadcast and depth of shade of a wool yarn. The clarity and definition of design and pattern of a wool broadloom carpet can only be alluded to as “wool like” by the synthetics.
Why wool? Wool looks better in the first place, looks better longer, takes less and less toxic methods to maintain, does not support flame, toxicity or smoke contribution, it has insulation value and also acts as a filter to many airborne contaminates such as formaldehyde.
Lastly, and this may come as the biggest and most pleasant surprise, an organic carpet made by Corniche Carpet Mills is comparatively priced to many of the better known synthetic floor coverings. Yes it is.
